Today was my first day at Channel Nine for work experience. I was assigned to work in Studio 3 control room for the News. Here I was able to distinguish the different roles played by the employees. These included the Technical Director, Assistant Director, Lighting Director and several Producers. I was able to observe and be taught the different aspects of operating a vision switch board and other elements included in the technical department of production. I enjoyed experiencing these skills and gaining knowledge on how the equipment operates. I was given the opportunity to operate the switch board when there was available time. I really enjoyed learning about the several aspects taken place behind the production and gained communication skills with the employees who assisted me.

Today I was allocated to the on-air tapes department. This is where all TV shows taken from LA by satellite is recorded to be put on air. Commercials are also recorded here and Channel nine uses tapes for any other recordings needed by other departments. I was assigned to complete cue sheets for different shows. This role include marking each segment and commercial break and recording them on the cue sheet which will be given to the the people in charge of this process. I was also taught how the recording process works and the different elements used within this side of production. I was given a tour around the channel nine studios, observing all departments and what they do. It was interesting to see how the on-air tapes department operates and how each recording is very critical and almost everything needs to be recorded and kept on the tapes as a back up.

Today I was given the opportunity to stay in the control room of one of the studios for the live airing of the Kerri-Anne show. This was an amazing opportunity as I was also able to stand backstage while Kerri-Anne was being filmed live. I was able to observe the intensity that occurs backstage and how in order to make the show successful a lot of hard effort needs to be taken place in the backstage production side of it. During the day, a really lovely producer gave me a tour around the backstage area of where the news gets filmed. I was able to play around with the camera, practising different angle shots. I was given great insight as to what occurs on and off air and the preparations that take place. I really enjoyed today and probably my most enjoyed day during the work placement at Channel Nine

Today I was taken to the control room where the morning and afternoon news is recorded, some of which are pre-recorded. This is automatically send down to the audio tapes room where several recordings of each segment are kept as back ups. By this stage, I had become familiar with the variety of equipment in both vision and audio and was eager to ask as many questions as possible. Knowing it was my last day, I made sure I soaked the most of my experience before I left.Overall, my entire experience at work placement was one to never forget and one that I will take aboard with me in the future. This opportunity was a stepping stone in reaching my goals and aspirations.
